Intermittent hypoxia, also called episodic hypoxia, is an intervention in which a person or animal undergoes alternating periods of normal oxygen levels and hypoxia, oxygen levels lower than those normally found in Earth atmosphere. While continuous hypoxia is generally associated with harmful effects such as altitude sickness, intermittent hypoxia used in moderation may be applied clinically to help alleviate various pathological conditions.
