Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure

Surgical Procedure

The loop electrosurgical excision procedure, abbreviated LEEP, is one of the most commonly used approaches to treat high grade cervical dysplasia and early stage cervical cancer discovered on colposcopic examination, known in the United Kingdom as large loop excision of the transformation zone. Considered a type of conization, it has been in use since the 1970s following its invention by Dr. Sheldon Weinstein. The procedure has a low cost and a high success rate, can be performed in an office setting, and usually requires only a local anesthetic, though its disadvantages include reports of decreased sexual satisfaction and a potential for preterm labor in a later pregnancy; approximately 500,000 LEEP procedures are performed in the United States each year.

FAQs

What does the NHS say happens during a loop excision?

The NHS says LLETZ is done with a local anaesthetic, removes tissue about the size of a fingernail and takes around 15 minutes.

The NHS colposcopy page describes the loop excision under the name large loop excision of the transformation zone, or LLETZ. It says LLETZ is often done at the same time as a colposcopy, and that you will not need to stay in hospital and can go home the same day. According to the NHS, you have an injection of local anaesthetic to numb your cervix first, so you should not feel any pain. A heated loop of wire is then used to remove the tissue, and an area of tissue about the size of a fingernail is removed. The NHS says LLETZ takes around 15 minutes.
