Manual therapy, also called manipulative therapy, is a treatment used mainly by physical therapists, occupational therapists, and massage therapists to address musculoskeletal pain and disability. It centers on kneading and manipulation of muscles along with joint mobilization and joint manipulation. Physical therapists are not the only practitioners who use the technique; Rolfers, athletic trainers, osteopaths, and physicians apply it as well.

FAQs
Is manual therapy effective for chronic low back pain?
Moderate-quality evidence suggests manipulation and mobilization are likely to reduce chronic low back pain and improve function.
A systematic review and meta-analysis of manipulation and mobilization concluded that there is moderate-quality evidence that both are likely to reduce pain and improve function for patients with chronic low back pain. The review found that manipulation appears to produce a larger effect than mobilization, and that both therapies appear safe. This describes the state of that research and is not medical advice for any individual person.
