Methylsulfonylmethane, or MSM, is an organosulfur compound with the formula (CH3)2SO2 that occurs naturally in small amounts in some plants, foods, and marine environments. It is sold as a dietary supplement marketed for anti-inflammatory pain relief, skin conditions, and immune system support, most often for osteoarthritis. Clinical evidence for these claims is limited, and no medical use of MSM has been formally approved; studies have found no definitive proof that it outperforms placebo for mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis. Industrially, MSM is also used as a high temperature solvent.
