Oxygen therapy, also called supplemental oxygen, is the use of oxygen as a medical treatment. Acute indications include hypoxemia, carbon monoxide toxicity and cluster headache, and it may also be given prophylactically to maintain blood oxygen levels during the induction of anesthesia. It is often useful in chronic hypoxemia caused by conditions such as severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or cystic fibrosis. Oxygen can be delivered at normal atmospheric pressure by nasal cannula, face mask or endotracheal intubation, in a hyperbaric chamber, or by bypassing the airway entirely, as in ECMO therapy.

FAQs
How is oxygen delivered in oxygen therapy?
Through tanks of liquid or gas oxygen or an oxygen concentrator, delivered by a nose tube, a mask or a tent.
MedlinePlus describes oxygen therapy as a treatment that provides extra oxygen to breathe in, also called supplemental oxygen. Several kinds of device can supply it. Some use tanks of liquid or gas oxygen, and others use an oxygen concentrator, which pulls oxygen out of the air. The oxygen reaches the person through a nose tube called a cannula, a mask, or a tent, and it is breathed in along with normal air. This entry records what is described about the treatment and is not medical advice.
Is hyperbaric oxygen therapy the same as ordinary oxygen therapy?
No. It is a different type, using a pressurized chamber or tube so the lungs gather up to three times more oxygen.
No. MedlinePlus calls hyperbaric oxygen therapy a different type of oxygen therapy. It involves breathing oxygen in a pressurized chamber or tube, which allows the lungs to gather up to three times more oxygen than breathing oxygen at normal air pressure would. Ordinary oxygen therapy supplies extra oxygen at normal pressure through devices such as a cannula or mask. This entry records what is described about the treatment and is not medical advice.
