Phlebectomy

Surgical Procedure

A phlebectomy, or vein stripping, is a surgical procedure done under general or local anesthetic to aid in the treatment of varicose veins and other manifestations of chronic venous disease. The vein stripped is usually the great saphenous vein, and the surgery involves making incisions, inserting a wire into the vein, attaching the vein to the wire and pulling it out from the body before the incisions are stitched and pressure dressings applied.

FAQs

Is vein stripping the first treatment offered for varicose veins?

It is usually offered only when simpler procedures are not suitable.

No. The NHS describes vein stripping, which it calls ligation and stripping, as surgery that may be offered when simpler procedures are not suitable. When it is done, the patient is usually asleep under a general anaesthetic. The surgeon makes one cut in the upper leg at the groin and a second cut lower down the leg, at the knee or ankle.
