Psychotherapy is the use of psychological methods, generally built on regular personal interaction between a therapist and a patient, to help a person change behavior, increase well-being, and work through problems. It aims to improve a person's mental health, ease troublesome behaviors, beliefs, compulsions, thoughts or emotions, and strengthen relationships and social skills. Many distinct forms of psychotherapy have been developed for individual adults, for families, and for children and adolescents. Some forms are considered evidence based treatments for diagnosed mental disorders, while other forms have been criticized as pseudoscience.
