Rabies Vaccine

Preventive and Immunologic Intervention

A rabies vaccine is a vaccine used to prevent rabies, a disease that is transmitted to humans typically through a bite or scratch from an infectious animal. Several rabies vaccines are available that are both safe and effective, and must be administered prior to exposure or within the latent period afterward, since the untreated virus is virtually 100 percent fatal once symptoms appear. After exposure, the vaccine is typically used along with rabies immunoglobulin, and vaccinating dogs is very effective in preventing the spread of rabies to humans. The first rabies vaccine was introduced in 1885 and was followed by an improved version in 1908; over 29 million people worldwide receive the human rabies vaccine annually, and it is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.

FAQs

What does treatment after a possible rabies exposure include besides the vaccine?

Wound washing and human rabies immune globulin are given alongside the vaccine.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, post-exposure prophylaxis has three parts: wound washing, human rabies immune globulin and the rabies vaccine. Its guidance on exposure says to wash any wounds immediately with soap and water for 15 minutes to flush out the virus, and to contact a health department or healthcare provider promptly so that the risk can be assessed. It notes that people who need the vaccine and do not get it before symptoms start will most likely die, which is why the assessment is described as critical.
