Radioactive iodine therapy is a nuclear medicine treatment that uses the radioactive isotope iodine-131, given as an unsealed source, to treat certain thyroid conditions. The treatment exploits the fact that normal thyroid cells naturally absorb and concentrate iodine, allowing the radioactive iodine to selectively target and destroy thyroid tissue. It is most commonly used to treat hyperthyroidism caused by Graves' disease and to treat thyroid cancer, and patients typically take the dose orally as a liquid or capsule in an outpatient setting, although the larger doses used to destroy cancerous thyroid tissue may require hospitalization and radiation isolation precautions.
