The Senning procedure is an atrial switch heart operation performed to treat transposition of the great arteries, redirecting blood flow at the level of the heart's upper chambers using the patient's own native heart tissue rather than a synthetic graft. It is named for its inventor, the Swedish cardiac surgeon Ake Senning, who was also the first surgeon to implant a permanent cardiac pacemaker, in 1958.

FAQs
Why is the arterial switch preferred over the Senning procedure?
The arterial switch (Jatene procedure) is now the preferred surgical correction.
The arterial switch, also called the Jatene procedure, is now the preferred surgical correction for transposition of the great arteries. In it the great arteries are cut and reattached to the ventricles they belong with, so the connection is corrected at the arteries themselves. The Senning procedure works at the level of the atria instead. The Brazilian surgeon Jatene performed the first arterial switch in 1975.

History (origin-year)
This procedure, a form of atrial switch, was developed and first performed by Senning in 1957 as a treatment for d-TGA (dextro-Transposition of the great arteries) before improvements in cardiopulmonary bypass made more curative surgical techniques feasible.
