Thickened fluids and thickened drinks are often used for people with dysphagia, a disorder of swallowing function, because their thicker consistency makes it less likely that a person will aspirate while drinking. Individuals with difficulty swallowing may find that ordinary liquids cause coughing, spluttering, or aspiration, and thickening the drinks allows them to swallow more safely; patients may be advised to consume thickened liquids after being extubated.
