Total Artificial Heart

Surgical Procedure

A total artificial heart is a device implanted to replace a patient's own heart entirely, most often as a bridge to keep the patient alive until a donor heart becomes available for transplantation, though research continues toward a device that could replace the heart permanently. Surgeons Domingo Liotta and Denton A. Cooley performed the first clinical implantation of a total artificial heart on April 4, 1969, at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston, when the pneumatically powered device sustained the patient for 64 hours until a donor heart could be transplanted.

FAQs

Has the United States approved more than one total artificial heart?

Only one has been approved by the FDA, and only as a bridge to transplant.

No. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute states that in the United States only one total artificial heart has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and that it is approved only for use as a bridge to transplant. The device is mainly a temporary measure that keeps blood pumping while a person waits for a donor heart. Scientists are still working to create a permanent artificial heart.
