Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve Replacement

Surgical Procedure

Transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement, also known as percutaneous pulmonary valve implantation, is the replacement of the pulmonary valve by way of catheterization through a vein. It is a minimally invasive alternative to conventional open heart surgery, commonly used to address conditions such as pulmonary atresia and used for congenital defects of the right ventricular outflow tract or a failing artificial valve, with reported successful implantation in ninety-two to ninety-eight percent of cases.

FAQs

Which patients can receive a transcatheter pulmonary valve in the United States?

The Harmony valve is indicated for children and adults with severe pulmonary regurgitation who would otherwise need surgical valve replacement.

The answer depends on the device, because each approved valve has its own indication. The Harmony transcatheter pulmonary valve system, approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration on March 26, 2021, is indicated for pediatric and adult patients with severe pulmonary regurgitation who have a native or surgically repaired right ventricular outflow tract and are clinically indicated for surgical pulmonary valve replacement. Severe regurgitation is defined by echocardiography or by a pulmonary regurgitant fraction of 30 percent or more on cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. This describes one device's regulatory indication and is not medical advice. A cardiology team decides who qualifies.
