Savlon is a brand of antibacterial and antiseptic personal care products whose active ingredients are cetrimide and chlorhexidine gluconate, two antiseptics discovered and first developed by Imperial Chemical Industries. It is commonly sold as a cream and as a liquid, and the range also includes antiseptic sprays, sticking plasters, soap and healing gel. The liquid is used to cleanse skin lesions and prevent infection in small cuts, blisters and minor burns, and it is a familiar item in first aid kits. The name comes from the Avlon Works, the ICI manufacturing site at Avonmouth near Bristol. Ownership differs by region: Johnson and Johnson bought the brand from ICI in 1992 for Sub-Saharan Africa, while the United Kingdom rights passed to STADA subsidiary Thornton and Ross in 2019.
