Immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome is a condition that can arise in some cases of HIV/AIDS or other immunosuppression once the immune system begins to recover, when it responds to a previously acquired opportunistic infection with an overwhelming inflammatory reaction. This response paradoxically makes the symptoms of the original infection worse even though the immune system is, in a broader sense, recovering.
