Cardiac tamponade, also known as pericardial tamponade, is compression of the heart caused by fluid buildup in the pericardial sac around it, a pericardial effusion. Onset may be rapid or gradual, and symptoms typically include those of obstructive shock, such as shortness of breath, weakness, lightheadedness, and cough, along with symptoms related to the underlying cause.
