Myocarditis

Diseases of the Circulatory System

Myocarditis is inflammation of the heart muscle, most often triggered by a viral infection but sometimes by other infections, autoimmune disease, or exposure to certain toxins or drugs. It can cause chest pain, fatigue, an irregular heartbeat, or shortness of breath, though mild cases may cause no symptoms at all. Severe cases can weaken the heart's pumping ability and, in rare instances, cause sudden death.
