Precordial thump is a medical procedure used in the treatment of ventricular fibrillation or pulseless ventricular tachycardia under certain conditions. It addresses life-threatening cardiac dysrhythmias but carries a low success rate, and it may be considered only in witnessed, monitored cases of a shockable cardiac rhythm when defibrillation equipment is not immediately available; it must never be allowed to delay cardiopulmonary resuscitation or defibrillation, and it should not be attempted in an unwitnessed out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
