Varicose veins are a condition in which superficial veins, most often in the legs, become enlarged, twisted, and visibly swollen beneath the skin. Many cases are primarily a cosmetic concern, but some people experience aching, itching, fatigue in the legs, or nighttime cramps. Complications, when they occur, can include skin ulcers, bleeding, and inflammation of the affected vein, and the condition results from malfunctioning vein valves that allow blood to pool rather than flow efficiently back toward the heart.
