Cholesteatoma

Diseases of the Ear and Mastoid Process

Cholesteatoma is a destructive, expanding growth of keratinizing squamous epithelium in the middle ear and/or mastoid process. It is not cancerous, but its erosive and expansile growth can destroy the small bones of the middle ear and even extend through the base of the skull into the brain. Cholesteatomas often become infected, causing chronically draining ears, and treatment almost always requires surgical removal.
