Conductive Hearing Loss

Diseases of the Ear and Mastoid Process

Conductive hearing loss (CHL) is a type of hearing impairment that occurs when sound waves cannot efficiently travel through the outer ear, the eardrum, or the middle ear's small bones (ossicles), preventing sound from reaching the inner ear effectively. It can affect one ear, called unilateral conductive hearing loss, or both, called bilateral conductive hearing loss. Common causes include ear infections, fluid in the middle ear, earwax buildup, a damaged eardrum, or abnormalities of the ossicles.
