Otosclerosis is a condition of the middle and inner ear in which portions of the dense bone of the bony labyrinth remodel into irregular spongy bone. As these lesions reach the stapes bone, it is resorbed and then hardens, limiting its movement and producing hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo, or a combination of the three. The name is something of a misnomer, since much of the disease's course is marked by softer, lucent bone changes rather than hardening, so it is also known as otospongiosis.
