Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Diseases of the Ear and Mastoid Process

Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is a type of hearing loss in which the underlying cause lies in the inner ear, the sensory organ itself, or the vestibulocochlear nerve, and it accounts for about ninety percent of reported hearing loss. It is usually permanent and can range from mild to total, though when it comes on suddenly, immediate treatment with prednisone or other therapies may reverse some of the loss. It can be further described by the shape of its audiogram, for example as high frequency, low frequency, U shaped, notched, peaked, or flat.
