Mastoiditis is inflammation of the mucosal lining of the mastoid antrum and the mastoid air cell system inside the mastoid process, the portion of the temporal bone behind the ear, usually resulting from an untreated acute otitis media infection that spreads into those air-containing spaces. It was once a leading cause of child mortality, but with antibiotics it has become rare in developed countries, where surgical treatment is now less frequent and more conservative than in the past.
