Cauliflower ear is an irreversible deformity that develops when the external portion of the ear is struck and forms a blood clot or other fluid collection beneath the perichondrium. This separates the cartilage from the perichondrium that normally supplies it with nutrients, causing the cartilage to die and fibrous tissue to form in the skin above it. The outer ear becomes permanently swollen and misshapen, resembling a cauliflower, which gives the condition its name.
