Presbycusis, or age-related hearing loss, is the cumulative effect of aging on hearing. It is a progressive, irreversible, and usually symmetrical sensorineural hearing loss caused by degeneration of the cochlea or other structures of the inner ear or auditory nerve, and it is most pronounced at higher frequencies. Hearing loss that accumulates with age but stems from causes other than normal aging is not considered presbycusis, although separating the two can be difficult in practice.
