Central Retinal Vein Occlusion

Diseases of the Eye and Adnexa

Central retinal vein occlusion is a condition in which the central retinal vein becomes occluded, usually through thrombosis. Because the central retinal artery and vein are the sole source of blood supply and drainage for the retina, the blockage can cause ischemia and edema, and complications can include ocular ischemic syndrome and glaucoma. The disease has a milder nonischemic form and a more severe ischemic form, and nonischemic cases may progress to the ischemic type over time.
