Orbital cellulitis is inflammation of the eye tissues behind the orbital septum, most commonly caused by an acute spread of infection into the eye socket from the adjacent sinuses or through the bloodstream, though it may also follow trauma. Without proper treatment it may lead to serious consequences, including permanent loss of vision or even death; the condition is distinct from periorbital cellulitis, a shallower infection in front of the orbital septum.
