Duane syndrome

Duane syndrome is a rare congenital type of strabismus, most commonly characterized by the inability of the eye to move outward. The condition was first described by the ophthalmologists Jakob Stilling in 1887 and Siegmund Turk in 1896, and it was later named after Alexander Duane, who discussed the disorder in more detail in 1905. It is also known by several other names, including Duane retraction syndrome, eye retraction syndrome, retraction syndrome, congenital retraction syndrome and Stilling-Turk-Duane syndrome. The naming history is a good example of a disorder that carries the name of a later describer rather than the first observers.
