Chandler's disease

Chandler's disease, also known as idiopathic avascular osteonecrosis of the femoral head, is a rare condition in which the bone cells within the head of the femur die because of an insufficient blood supply to that area near the hip joint. The disease is notable because the femoral head is typically the only part of the body affected, with the cause of the interrupted blood flow usually unable to be established in most cases. It falls within orthopedics and affects the musculoskeletal system, specifically the hip joint, producing hip pain that progresses through recognized stages as the bone tissue deteriorates, with treatment ranging from conservative management to surgical intervention depending on the severity and stage at diagnosis.
