Costochondritis, also known as chest wall pain syndrome or costosternal syndrome, is benign inflammation of the upper costochondral and sternocostal joints, most often affecting several ribs on one side, typically the second through fifth ribs. Its primary symptom, chest pain, is treated as a possible sign of a medical emergency, making costochondritis a common presentation in the emergency department; one study found it responsible for 30 percent of emergency department patients presenting with chest pain.
