Craniocervical Instability

Diseases of the Musculoskeletal System and Connective Tissue

Craniocervical instability is a condition marked by excessive movement of the vertebrae at the atlanto-occipital and atlanto-axial joints, the joints between the skull and the top two vertebrae known as C1 and C2. This excess movement can injure nearby neural structures and compress the brain stem, spinal cord, vagus nerve or vertebral artery, producing a range of symptoms depending on which structures are affected.
