Grisel's Syndrome

Diseases of the Musculoskeletal System and Connective Tissue

Grisel's syndrome is a non-traumatic subluxation of the atlanto-axial joint caused by inflammation of the surrounding tissues, a rare condition that usually affects children. It typically begins with progressive throat and neck pain and stiffness, which can be followed by neurologic symptoms such as pain or numbness radiating into the arms, and in extreme cases can progress to quadriplegia or death from acute respiratory failure. It often follows soft tissue inflammation in the neck, such as upper respiratory tract infections or peritonsillar or retropharyngeal abscesses, and can also follow procedures such as adenoidectomy, particularly in susceptible individuals such as those with Down syndrome.
