Bronchiolitis

Diseases of the Respiratory System

Bronchiolitis is inflammation of the small airways, called bronchioles, in the lungs. Acute bronchiolitis is caused by a viral infection and usually affects children younger than two years of age, with symptoms that may include fever, cough, a runny nose, and wheezing; more severe cases can involve nasal flaring, grunting, or respiratory distress, and signs of dehydration may appear if feeding has been disrupted.
