Pulmonary rehabilitation, also called respiratory rehabilitation, is a broad therapeutic program for people with chronic respiratory disease who remain symptomatic or continue to have reduced function despite standard medical treatment. The American Thoracic Society and European Respiratory Society define it as an evidence-based, multidisciplinary and comprehensive intervention for symptomatic patients with chronic respiratory disease whose daily activity is often limited by their condition. It consists of a series of services delivered to patients and their families, aimed chiefly at improving the patient's quality of life, delivered in a range of settings depending on the patient's needs and sometimes combined with medication.
