Sleep Apnea

Diseases of the Respiratory System

Sleep apnea is a disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep, most commonly because the throat muscles relax and narrow or block the airway. Repeated interruptions fragment sleep and lower blood oxygen levels, commonly causing loud snoring, gasping during sleep, and excessive daytime fatigue. Left untreated, it is associated with an increased risk of hypertension and other cardiovascular problems.
