Zinc and the Common Cold

Pharmacological Therapy

Zinc supplements are a group of dietary supplements commonly used in an attempt to treat the common cold. There is no evidence that zinc supplementation prevents colds in the general population, though there is evidence that properly composed zinc lozenges can shorten the duration of a cold, an effect that has not been reported for ordinary oral zinc tablets. Adverse effects of zinc supplements taken by mouth include a bad taste and nausea.
