Nipple pigmentation

Diseases of the Skin and Subcutaneous Tissue

Nipple pigmentation, also called areolar pigmentation, is the darkening of the nipple or the areola. The source describes it as dose-dependently induced by the effect of estrogens, so that it can occur normally during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and it can also appear as a side effect of high-dose estrogen therapy. In the Medicine Atlas it is recorded as a hormone-related change in skin pigmentation that is often a normal physiological finding rather than a disease in itself, and it is noted here as a described condition only, without any medical advice.
