Sulpiride

Nervous System Agents

Sulpiride is an antipsychotic medication of the benzamide class, sold under the brand name Dogmatil among others. Most sources call it an atypical antipsychotic, although some texts have referred to it as a typical one. It is used mainly to treat psychosis associated with schizophrenia and major depressive disorder, and in low doses it is sometimes used for anxiety and dysthymia. Chemically and clinically it is similar to amisulpride, and levosulpiride, its purified levo-isomer, is sold in some countries for similar purposes. Sulpiride is in common use in Asia, Central America, Europe, South Africa and South America, but it is not approved in the United States, Canada or Australia. That uneven approval history is part of the record here. This entry describes what is held about the drug and is not medical advice.
