Tocilizumab

Antineoplastic and Immunomodulating Agents

Tocilizumab is an interleukin-6 (IL-6) receptor antagonist, a monoclonal antibody that blocks the signalling of the inflammatory messenger interleukin-6. Its US label, sold as Actemra, lists rheumatoid arthritis, giant cell arteritis, systemic sclerosis-associated interstitial lung disease, polyarticular and systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis, CAR T cell-induced cytokine release syndrome and hospitalised COVID-19 as approved uses. It is given either as an intravenous infusion or as a subcutaneous injection, and it carries a boxed warning about the risk of serious infections. ChEMBL records a first approval in 2005, and its ATC code, L04AC07, places it among the interleukin inhibitors in the group of antineoplastic and immunomodulating agents.
