All Clinical Physician-Scientists of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries

Practising physicians whose observations and inventions became standard medicine: Laennec with the stethoscope, Semmelweis with handwashing, Bright on kidney disease, Osler in clinical teaching, Kussmaul in diagnosis, Riva-Rocci with the blood pressure cuff, Forssmann with cardiac catheterisation, Kolff with the artificial kidney and Crawford Long in early ether anesthesia. A person belongs here when the cited article describes a clinician known for a diagnostic or therapeutic advance. It excludes the premodern physicians and the unorthodox ones.
