Irma LeVasseur

Obstetricians, Gynecologists and Pediatric Specialists

Irma LeVasseur was a Canadian physician and a pioneer of pediatric medicine, the first French-Canadian woman to become a doctor. Born in Quebec City on 20 January 1877, she could not study medicine in Canada as a woman, so she trained at Saint Paul University in Minnesota and graduated in 1900. A private bill in the Quebec Assembly in 1903 allowed her to practise, and she then studied pediatrics in France and Germany. In 1907 she and Justine Lacoste-Beaubien founded the Hopital Sainte-Justine in Montreal. She later helped found the Hopital de l'Enfant-Jesus in Quebec City and set up a hospital and a school for children with disabilities. She worked in Serbia during a typhoid epidemic and died in Quebec City on 18 January 1964.
