Origin prehistoric times
Anatomy is the branch of morphology concerned with the study of the internal and external structure of organisms and their parts, and its name comes from the Ancient Greek word anatome, meaning dissection. It is an old science with beginnings in prehistoric times, and it is closely tied to developmental biology, embryology, comparative anatomy, evolutionary biology and phylogeny. Human anatomy is one of the essential basic sciences applied in medicine and is usually studied alongside physiology, which examines the function of the same structures. The discipline divides into macroscopic or gross anatomy, the examination of body parts by unaided eyesight, and microscopic anatomy, which uses optical instruments to study tissues, known as histology, and cells. Its history is a progressive understanding of how the organs and structures of the human body work, with methods advancing from dissection of animal carcasses and human cadavers to twentieth century imaging such as X-ray, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging.
