Christian Gottlieb Ludwig (1709 to 1773) was a German physician and botanist born in Brieg, Silesia, now Brzeg in Poland. He studied medicine and botany at the University of Leipzig from 1728, was forced by lack of funds to interrupt his studies and worked as a botanist on an African expedition led by Johann Ernst Hebenstreit, then resumed his studies in 1733. He took his doctorate in 1737, became associate professor of medicine in 1740 and later full professor of medicine, pathology and therapy at Leipzig. He corresponded with Carl Linnaeus about the latter's classification system, and Linnaeus named the plant genus Ludwigia for him. He was the father of two physicians and naturalists, Christian Friedrich Ludwig and Christian L. Ludwig.
