Joachim Camerarius the Younger

Traditional and Historical Medicine Practitioners

Joachim Camerarius the Younger (1534 to 1598) was a German physician, botanist, zoologist and humanist scholar from Nuremberg, son of the humanist Joachim Camerarius the Elder. After early studies at Wittenberg and Leipzig he turned to medicine under Johannes Crato von Krafftheim, studied at the University of Padua and took his doctorate at Bologna in 1562. He then returned to Nuremberg and practiced medicine. When the city council founded the Collegium Medicum in 1592 he became its dean and held the post until his death. Trained in strict Galenic medicine, he also shared the naturalist interests of Konrad Gessner and Pietro Andrea Mattioli. His works include a 1583 synopsis of commentaries on the plague, the Hortus Medicus et Philosophicus of 1598, the emblem books Symbola et emblemata, and a popular edition of Mattioli on Dioscorides. He corresponded with Gaspard Bauhin, Carolus Clusius and Konrad Gessner.
