Johann Georg Roederer

Obstetricians, Gynecologists and Pediatric Specialists

Johann Georg Roederer was a French physician and obstetrician, a native of Strasbourg, who lived from 1726 to 1763. He studied medicine at Leiden, Paris and London and trained in midwifery at the Strasbourg school under Johann Jakob Fried. On a recommendation from Albrecht von Haller he was appointed in 1751 by King George II, as elector of Hanover, to the first professorship of obstetrics at the University of Göttingen. In 1753 he published Elementa artis obstetriciae, a textbook of the elements of obstetrics for his students, and with Carl Gottlieb Wagler he wrote a treatise on the typhoid epidemic at Göttingen in the years 1757 to 1763. He was a member of the Académie Royale de Chirurgie and a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. The obstetric term Roederer head position carries his name. He died in Paris at the age of 36, and his chair passed to Heinrich August Wrisberg.
