Karl Abraham

Psychiatrists and Neurologists

Karl Abraham (1877 to 1925) was an influential German psychoanalyst and a collaborator of Sigmund Freud, who called him his best pupil. Born in Bremen to a German-Jewish family, he studied medicine and took a position at the Burghölzli mental hospital in Switzerland, where he first encountered the psychoanalysis of Carl Gustav Jung. After meeting Freud in 1907 he returned to Germany and founded the Berlin Society of Psychoanalysis in 1910, and he served as president of the International Psychoanalytical Association from 1914 to 1918 and again in 1925. He worked with Freud on manic-depressive illness, analysed Melanie Klein, Edward Glover and Alix Strachey, and mentored Karen Horney, Helene Deutsch and Franz Alexander. His studies of the oral and anal stages of development described the character traits and psychopathology that follow fixation at those stages.
