Larkin B. Coles

Generalist and Primary Care Physicians

Larkin Baker Coles (1803 to 1856) was an American medical doctor, minister, Millerite preacher, anti-tobacco activist and vegetarian. Born in New Hampshire, he graduated from Castleton Medical College in 1825, trained as a minister and was associated with William Miller. By 1844 he lived in Boston and belonged to the Boston Medical Society and the Massachusetts Medical Society. His best known work, Philosophy of Health (1848), went through many editions and argued for Christian health reform: exercise, fresh air, vegetarianism, avoiding stimulants, sexual purity and drugless medicine. In 1853 he wrote The Beauties and Deformities of Tobacco-Using, an early attack on tobacco. His views influenced Ellen G. White. This entry records what he held and is not medical advice.
