Maurice Neligan (1937 to 8 October 2010) was an Irish heart surgeon who was also an activist, a newspaper columnist and a media commentator. He was considered one of the most recognisable doctors in Ireland and was described as Ireland's answer to Christiaan Barnard. He performed a number of firsts in Irish medicine, and it is thought that he carried out between fourteen and fifteen thousand heart operations during his career. After his death in 2010 the Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny described him as the first superstar of Irish medicine. This entry follows the short summary given by its source and is a historical record, not medical advice.
