Robert Bell (physician)

Obstetricians, Gynecologists and Pediatric Specialists

Robert Bell (6 January 1845 to 20 January 1926) was an English physician and medical writer, born in Alnwick, Northumberland, to Scottish parents. He studied at the University of Glasgow and in Paris, and trained under Lord Kelvin and Joseph Lister. He practised in Glasgow from 1868, became a Fellow of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow in 1870, and in 1876 founded the Glasgow Hospital for Diseases Peculiar to Women, where he was a senior physician for 21 years. He specialised in gynaecology and oncology, moved to London in 1904 and became vice-president of the International Cancer Research Society. He was also associated with naturopathy and advocated alternative cancer treatments, including raw foodism, fruitarianism and vegetarianism. In 1912 the British Medical Journal accused him of quackery, and he sued for libel and was awarded 2000 pounds in damages. Nothing here is medical advice.
